john hughes died

Hughes, the popular, almost-mythic filmmaker who made teen angst hurt so good in biting comedies such as Sixteen Candles, only to leave Generation Xers largely on their own as the Molly Ringwald-ruled 1980s ended, died this morning in Manhattan. He was 59.

Cause of death appears to be a sudden heart attack while visiting his family in New York City. We're sure cable channels will be scrambling to toss together some Hughes marathons this weekend, and though his time as a director might have been over for some time, the impression he left on audiences and filmmakers will hopefully never be forgotten.

Born in 1950 in Michigan, Hughes' writing career began in Chicago, the leafy suburbs of which served as future home to the Buellers, the Saturday morning detention gang at Shermer High, and nearly all his screenplay characters.

He created the famous Edge “Credit Card Shaving Test” marketing campaign. He wrote jokes for Rodney Dangerfield and Joan Rivers, before writing a letter to National Lampoon Magazine inspired by his family trips as a child. This of course became the basis for the film National Lampoon’s Vacation

In 1979, the former ad copywriter and National Lampoon magazine staffer scored his first Hollywood credit on a short-lived sitcom spinoff of Animal House. Within five years, Hughes was in the director's chair on Sixteen Candles.

He will be missed.
