Melissa "Missy" Giove, 37, is facing drug trafficking charges after being caught plotting to distribute 384 lbs of marijuana in upstate New York. Giove, an award winning athlete was caught in a sting by New York police along with accomplice, Eric Canori, 30.
Giove and Canori were charged with conspiracy to possess and distribute more than 100 kilograms of marijuana when authorities seized over 400 pounds of pot from a truck Giove was driving and from Canori’s home outside Saratoga Springs, north of Albany.
Illinois police pulled over a woman driving a truck and trailer loaded with about 220 pounds of marijuana last weekend, and learned of Giove and Canori’s plans. Authorities completed the delivery, where Giove picked up the vehicle and trailer, and then drove north and followed Canori to his home, where more than 150 pounds of pot and more than $1 million in cash were found stashed in a closet and the basement.
Nicknamed "The Missile," Giove and her cohort, Eric Canori, face a maximum of 40 years in prison and a fine of $2 million if convicted.
There's apparently a local angle to this as well, as a traffic stop here in Illinois led to their eventual arrest.
Melissa Giove is a popular down hill bike champion and one of mountain-bike racing's first mainstream female superstars. Giove retired from mountain-biking in 2003 after winning 11 World Cup competitions and 14 NORBA downhill races.
