Zac Sunderland is a brave 17 year old boy that sailed alone around the world in 13 months.
Zac Sunderland docked Thursday in this coastal community west of Los Angeles, completing a 28,000-mile trip that began last year. His family, friends and hundreds of curious onlookers cheered as his 36-foot Intrepid boat entered the harbor.
He left Marina del Rey 13 months ago with a bold ambition to become the youngest person to sail around the world alone, returned to complete that quest today at 10:30 a.m.
Those welcoming Sunderland back home were heard to say that the seventeen-year-old had “left as a boy and came back a man.” His father, Laurence Sunderland, thinks likewise, saying today to the LA Times, “He left thinking that he knew a lot about life, and the difference now is, he does. You look into his eyes; he’s very much a deep thinker now. He tries to anticipate things more so now, before they happen.”
His father is a shipwright who has met him at various stops around the world, often to help him repair damage to the boat.
Sunderland, 17, who was greeted offshore and escorted in by an armada of well-wishers aboard dozens of sailboats and fancy yachts, cleared the breakwater beneath a clearing sky and stepped ashore at Fisherman's Village in bright sunshine.
The long journey, started in Marina del Rey, California, brought the young Sunderland through three oceans and five seas. He also crossed the equator twice and traveled, in total, over 25,000 miles during which he encountered, “a pirate scare, a broken boom, broken tiller, broken forestay rigging, a broken bulkhead, and he was swamped and almost washed overboard by a rogue wave off Grenada.”
The previous record was held by Jesse Martin, an Australian, who had finished the same journey at the age of eighteen in 1999.
