Bears Select WR Derek Kinder

Pitt wide receiver Derek Kinder was selected by the Chicago Bears in the seventh round of today's NFL draft. Kinder was the 42nd pick of the seventh round and the 251st player out of 256 players selected in the draft.

One other player of local interest, Liberty tailback Rashad Jennings, was selected in the seventh round as well. Jennings, who began his career at Pitt and then transferred to Liberty, was picked by Jacksonville one spot ahead of Kinder.

Also, Pitt long snapper Mark Estermyer (Blackhawk High School) is expected to sign a free agent contract with the Steelers.

BIOGRAPHY: Three-year starter who finished his senior season leading the team in receiving with 36/422/3. Sat on the sidelines in ?07 after tearing a ligament in his right knee. All-Conference selection as a junior after totals of 57/847/6.

POSITIVES: Nice-sized receiver who struggled making his way back from injury last year. Consistently looks the ball into his hands, makes the difficult over-the-shoulder reception, and not afraid to get vertical in a crowd for the catch. Possesses strong hands and pulls the fastball from the air. Comes back to the ball out of breaks, effectively using his frame to shield away opponents.

NEGATIVES: Marginally productive last season. Inconsistent as a blocker. Lacks the speed to get downfield separation.

ANALYSIS: Kinder possesses NFL size and displayed a lot of skill in the past. His game took a step back last year, and he must return to prior playing form for any chance to make a roster this summer.

PROJECTION: Free Agent
