Randy Johnson announced his retirement from baseball after 22 seasons in the major leagues Tuesday evening.
Johnson said he took his time this winter, waiting to make his decision until he could do so "wholeheartedly, and stick to it." He put the chance of him staying retired at 100%."There's not a 99.9% chance," he said.
For now, he said he would enjoy a summer with his family and perhaps partake in some activities generally forbidden under the standard player contract.
The towering, fearsome left-hander won five Cy Young Awards, including four straight from 1999-2002, and will finish his career with 303 wins. He is second on the all-time strikeout list with 4,875 and his strikeouts per nine innings pitched rate of 10.6 is the best ever.
In his one World Series appearance versus the Yankees, Johnson went 3-0, threw 17.1 innings, 2 complete games and a shut out.
He also won a World Series MVP with the Diamondbacks in 2001.
