On Saturday, during the Oregon State vs Arizona State college football game, Jahvid Best jumped up to catch the football and make a touchdown, but came down on his back in a strange twist and was knocked unconscious.

He was a fringe Heisman candidate on a top-five team early in the season, flying high heading into the Pac-10 schedule. Then he and the Golden Bears crashed against Oregon and USC, dropping two straight by a 72-6 tally as Best could only muster 102 yards in those two outings combined

While Best’s teammates kneeled on the field and prayed for his well being, medical staffers rushed to the running back’s aid. Placing his body on a gurney, a white sheet over his legs and torso, and an oxygen mask on his face.

Best was carted off the field and taken to the emergency room. He had movement in all of his extremities, something Coach Jeff Tedford quickly told his players so they would know their teammate was all right.

Tedford said results of an initial exam came out normal.
“It's very sobering when that happens,” Tedford said. “When it happened, it was unbelievably scary. He was out of it pretty good.”

Cal, who played Oregon State, lost 31-14.
