A magnitude 8.3 earthquake struck the Samoan Islands Tuesday at 6:48 a.m. (1:28 p.m. ET) according to the U.S. Geological Survey, prompting warnings for islands around the epicenter. Water flowed inland about 100 yards before receding, leaving cars stuck in the mud.

Officials said that they don't believe coastal regions are likely to suffer much damage but that some beaches could see higher-than-usual tides about 9 p.m. Pacific time. Curt Kaplan of the National Weather Service in Oxnard said the seismic activity could bring waves a foot higher than normal.

Reports indicate that at least 40 people are dead. Meteorologist Mase Akapo said the deaths occurred in four different villages on the island of Tutuila and in neighboring Samoa.

The weather service issued a statement that said in part: "A Tsunami Advisory means that a tsunami capable of producing strong currents or waves dangerous to persons in or very near the water is imminent or expected. Significant, widespread inundation is not expected for areas under an advisory. Currents may be hazardous to swimmers, boats, and coastal structures and may continue for several hours after the initial wave arrival."

The quake struck about 10:45 a.m. about 4,000 miles from Los Angeles, and officials in American Samoa have reported some fatalities.

Stafon Johnson hospitalized

USC Trojans running back Stafon Johnson injured his throat in a weightlifting accident Monday and required emergency surgery.

According to USC Rips It, Johnson was bench-pressing with a spotter in the Heritage Hall weight room when the bar slipped from his right hand and fell on his throat at an angle.Witnesses said he was spitting up blood and was taken to the hospital in an ambulance, and is in surgery.

Chris Carlisle, the head strength and conditioning coach who was within 10 feet of the accident, told USC Rips It he was shocked such an accident occurred.

"It was an unfortunate accident and Stafon is getting great care right now," coach Pete Carroll told USC Rips It. "We don't have a lot of information at this point and we'll keep everyone updated, but our thoughts and prayers are with Stafon."

Johnson's recovery time from surgery is currently unknown.

Jaclyn Smith Suicide

Reports were coming in from Latin America that Charlie’s Angels star Jaclyn Smith attempted to commit suicide today and was in critical condition.

Reports say the actress was been hospitalized in San Pedro Sula, after being transferred from the island of Roatan in the Caribbean.

However, there's no confirmation of this, and according to Smith’s Twitter page, “Jaclyn is safe and home with her family. She is not in Honduras. It is a lie.”

What REALLY seems to have happened is no less tragic ... Smith's stunt double in the Angels series, Sandra Franklin, is the one who was injured. All of the details seem to apply to her and are, apparently, true.

The Jason Debus Heigl Foundation was founded by Nancy and Katherine Heigl in memory of a wonderful son and brother. Jason was killed in a car accident in 1986 when he was fifteen years old.

The focus of the Foundation is to increase awareness of inhumane treatment of animals, support non-profit rescue efforts, assist homeless shelter animals with rescue and medical treatment.

One of our major programs, The Heigl Hounds of Hope, focuses on rescuing medium to large dogs from high-kill shelters throughout Southern California. Many have experienced abandonment, cruelty and neglect. To prepare the dogs for a new home and family we have hired a trainer to work with them on basic obedience training. At our training ranch the dogs learn all the basics needed to adjust and prepare for a new good life with a loving family.

Katherine Heigl and husband Josh Kelley adopted a baby girl from Korea. The couple named the 10-month-old baby as Nancy Leigh, after the actress's mother Nancy and her sister Margaret Leigh. The girl will go by the nickname Naleigh.

Myles Brand Dies at 67

Myles Brand, who fired basketball coach Bob Knight for bad behavior at Indiana University and later led a crackdown by college sports’ governing body on academic failure, died today.

Brand died Wednesday afternoon at age 67, ending a nine-month battle with pancreatic cancer. He had continued in his job after his diagnosis with the disease in January, cutting back on public appearances but maintaining a presence in the NCAA's Indianapolis offices until recent weeks.

He passed away at his home in Indianapolis, surrounded by family, the association said.

Tributes began pouring in immediately.

"Myles Brand was a dear friend and a great academic leader. ... a tireless advocate for the student-athlete," said Michael Adams, president of the University of Georgia and chairman of the NCAA Executive Committee, which will select his successor. "Indeed, he worked to ensure that the student was first in the student-athlete model. He will be greatly missed."

Myles Brand was born on May 17, 1942, in Brooklyn, New York. He played basketball and ran track in high school, and played a year of basketball and lacrosse at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Brand is the fourth president of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, was credited with increasing commercial opportunities and broadening revenue distribution among member schools, while trying to make athletes more a part of the overall student body.

Brand is survived by his wife, Peg, and a son, Joshua.

Jim Carroll, the poet and punk rocker in the outlaw tradition of Rimbaud and Burroughs who chronicled his wild youth in “The Basketball Diaries,” died Friday at his home in Manhattan. He was 60.

The cause was a heart attack, said Rosemary Carroll, his former wife.

In 1978 he released “The Basketball Diaries”, an autobiographical account of of being a teenager in New York City, which in 1995 was made into a film staring Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Wahlberg. In 1978 he also formed his punk rock/new wave group The Jim Carroll Band, which released the single “People Who Died” in 1980 and now sadly Jim is one of those people.

Say goodbye to an original and a artist.

John Stossel Joins FOX News

John Stossel is leaving ABC News for Fox, where he'll host a weekly show on Fox Business and host a series of specials for Fox News.

Stossel, best known for his work as co-anchor of ABC News' "20/20," will anchor "Stossel," a weekly program on FOX Business Network, and make regular appearances on FOX News Channel, it was announced Thursday.

He'll host a two-hour weekly show on Fox Business and make appearances on Fox News in both the daytime and primetime hours.Stossel and a panel of experts will explore a wide range of topics including civil liberties, the business of health care and Social Security.

"I'm thrilled to join FOX News and look forward to inventing a new show for FOX Business," Stossel said.

"John Stossel is one of the most talented and thought-provoking journalists in the field and we are extremely excited to welcome him to the FOX Business team," FOX Business Network Executive Vice President Kevin Magee said. "His insights on consumer-related issues are unparalleled and will be a natural complement to our business programming."

Terms of Stossel's contract were not disclosed.

Mike Duvall resigns after sex scandal

A Republican state lawmaker from Yorba Linda has resigned after he was caught on tape bragging about having sex with a female lobbyist and another woman.

Assemblyman Mike Duvall (R- Yorba Linda) stepped down after legislative leaders stripped him of his committee posts this morning and launched an ethics probe of his actions.

The Los Angeles television station KCAL reported that the two women were both married and that one of them represented an energy business with interests before a committee where he was vice chairman.

"I am deeply saddened that my inappropriate comments have become a major distraction for my colleagues in the Assembly, who are working hard on the very serious problems facing our state," Duvall said in a written statement. "I have come to the conclusion that it would not be fair to my family, my constituents or to my friends on both sides of the aisle to remain in office. Therefore, I have decided to resign my office, effective immediately, so that the Assembly can get back to work."

On the tape, Duvall describes the "little eye-patch underwear" worn by one of the women. He refers to the age gap between her and him, after a recent birthday made them 18 years apart. "Now, you're getting old, man, I am going to have to trade you in," he said he told her.

Mr. Duvall, who is married and has two children, received a 100 percent rating from Capitol Resource Institute, a conservative advocacy group, for his votes on legislation considered pro-family during the 2007-8 legislative session.

Caster Semanya has appeared on the cover of South Africa’s You Magazine with a complete makeover designed to silence critics who insists the 18-year-old athlete is really a man, Jezebel has learned. After coming in first in last month’s world track championships, Semenya was famously subjected to a battery of gender tests to pinpoint her sexuality once and for all.

Four inside pages also show Semenya in a variety of stylish outfits, including leather pants and a sequined top — all of which You says Semenya wanted to buy after the photo shoot. She even experimented with makeup and nail polish.

“I’d like to dress up more often and wear dresses but I never get the chance. I am who I am and I’m proud of myself,” Caster told the mag.

But some are finding it upsetting. As Owen Slot in The Times Online points out: "Why such a public statement about her femininity now when a team of scientists are simultaneously drawing conclusions that may not agree with it. It is indecently hasty when she could easily have waited until the science had been completed."

Basketball great David Thompson will help induct Michael Jordan into the Hall of Fame. David Skywalker Thompson is fitting as Michael Jordan’s pick for his induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. The last few decades, Thompson has been used to people referring to him as “Michael Jordan before Michael Jordan”.

The choice of David Thompson came as a surprise to most Michael Jordan fans, because Jordan had enjoyed a close relationship with former NBA coach Phil Jackson and former college coach Dean Smith, who were both front-runners in the list of potential hosts to his induction.

David Thompson played college basketball for North Carolina State, and is the only former NC State college player to have had his number retired.

Tila Tequila Hospitalized

Reality star Tila Tequila received medical attention after an altercation with her boyfriend, NFL player Shawne Merriman, according to The Associated Press.

Reality starlet Tila Tequila called the police early Sunday claiming that NFL superstar and current boyfriend Shawne Merriman choked her. Merriman was taken into custody and is accused of battery and false imprisonment.

According to the reports, Tequila and Merriman were out at a club that night and after leaving, went back to his apartment. Merriman reportedly got upset when Tequila tried to leave, which is when she claims he "choked and physically restrained" her.

The A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila star told authorities "she had been choked and physically restrained by Merriman when she attempted to leave his residence," police told NBC San Diego.

Merriman's lawyer tells that his client is innocent, and that he was trying to keep an extremely inebriated" Tila from unsafely leaving the apartment.

Nguyen was taken to a hospital, but her condition was not immediately available.

The high-paid escort who notoriously romped with disgraced ex-Gov. Eliot Spitzer has a message to New York ladies: You're no better than me!

On Wednesday, Dupre, 23, published a rant on hip-hop mogul Russell Simmon’s Global Grind Blog in which she slams women who judge her — like “New Jersey housewives who are strung out on mood stabilizers,” for instance.

The brunette at the center of the sex scandal that prompted Spitzer’s resignation in 2008 is tired of being chastised by women who dare to judge sex workers.

"Get real and get over yourself," Ashley Dupre bluntly tells all the women out there who "just love to judge."

"Let me say this — most girls, to varying degrees, of course, want to be pampered and have nice shoes, designer handbags and gorgeous clothes,I know many women who target guys with money and use them to get these things. They toy with them, flirt, go on dates, have sex and then drop hints about that new dress . . . or being short on rent money — and the guys deliver it" Dupre writes in a blog post.

Ashley adds that she’s glad her “Client #9″ is “moving on with his life and considering getting back into politics. Everyone makes mistakes. Everyone deserves a second chance. Me too, right? Well, apparently not. Why? Because many people are liars and hypocrites.”

To show or not to show. That is the question when it comes to images of Jaycee Lee Dugard's two young daughters.

America certainly wants to see them. For most of Sept 1., requests for the 11 and 15-year old girls' photos were topping Google Trends,a service that compares the world’s interest in daily web searches.

Jaycee Lee Dugard’s daughters, Angel, 11, and Starlet, 15, were photographed attending a neighbor’s birthday party just two weeks before their true identities made headlines.


According to neighbor Cheyvonne Molino, there were no signs the girls were living in turmoil. “They were polite. They were well-mannered,” she said.

Garrido owned a small printing company, Printing for Less, which Dugard, whom customers knew as “Allissa” helped him run.

She was a graphic designer in Phillip Garrido's printing business, Molino said. "You could always call her at any time or email," she said. She was "just your normal 20-year-old."

Meanwhile, authorities are looking into whether Garrido may have been behind the disappearance of other young girls dating back to the late 1980s.

The FBI is combing Garrido’s property for evidence relating to unsolved cases. Cadaver dogs unearthed a bone fragment on a neighboring property, but investigators have not yet determined whether it is human or animal.
