morgan harrington body found

A press conference was held after skeletal remains were found in the Anchorage Farm of David Bass, leading to suspicion that is could well be the body of missing Virginia Tech student Morgan Harrington.

According to reports, the discovery was made this morning by a resident of Anchorage Farms, a 700-plus-acre tract of pasture and woods about fives miles south of Interstate 64 on the west side of U.S. 29. That person notified Albemarle County police, who then notified the Virginia State Police, who turned the investigation over to the detectives heading the Harrington investigation.

During the the conference the assembled crowd was told by Colonel Steven Flaherty, the superintendent of the Virginia State Police, that, “based on evidence… we’re fairly confident that the remains are those of Morgan Dana Harrington.”

The remains that were found were soon moved to the Chief Medical Examiner in Richmond from the farm in Anchorage.

Harrington has not been seen or heard from since Oct. 17, when the 20-year-old Virginia Tech student vanished from a Metallica concert in Charlottesville. She was last seen wearing a Pantera shirt, a black skirt and black boots.

ethiopian airlines crash

A Boeing 737-800 with 85 passangers and crew has crashed just after take off into the Mediterranean Sea.

Ethiopian Airlines Flight 409 left Rafik Hariri International Airport in Beirut about 2:30 a.m. and was headed to the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa.

It disappeared from radar a few minutes after takeoff, said Ghazi El Aridi, Lebanon's minister of public works and transportation.

Authorities did not immediately know the cause of the crash.

A witness to the Ethiopian Airlines crash said the plane appeared to be on fire when it crashed into the sea.

Ethiopian Airlines owns 3 737-800s and are configured with 154 seats. 16F/138Y.

Well, that was wild.The second of three, and possibly four, Pacific storms was supposed to be the mildest of the bunch. But, so far, it has turned out to be the wildest.

Around noon on Tuesday, the National Weather Service noticed that the incoming storm was filled with turbulent air that produced rarely heard thunderstorms. Then things got odder: forecasters noticed that the radar echoes looked like the signature of evolving tornados.

The warning was in place for the communities of Fallbrook, Vista, Oceanside, Encinitas, Carlsbad, San Clemente, Mission Viejo, and Laguna Beach.

A powerful storm seen earlier moving across Los Angeles has brought the possible threat of tornadoes in Orange County and San Diego county.

According to news reports on the Orange County Tornado, wind guests have been reported as exceeding 90 miles per hour in Southern California as these powerful thunderstorms continued.  They are reporting that the storm will move into the Southwest overnight bringing areas of Airzona, Utah, Colorado and New Mexico valley rain and mountain snow.

gaines adams dead

Chicago Bears defensive end Gaines Adams died Sunday morning in South Carolina, county coroner James T. Coursey said. Adams was 26.

Adams was taken to the emergency room at Self Regional Hospital in Greenwood, where was pronounced dead, the Greenville News first reported. A preliminary autopsy Sunday revealed Adams had an enlarged heart and likely died of cardiac arrest.

Adam Schefter and Jason La Canfora have tweeted that an enlarged heart caused cardiac arrest. According to Roy Philpott at Scout.com, Adams "is believed to have passed away in his sleep from a heart attack."

Adams, a standout sack machine at Clemson, was seen as a disappointment in Tampa Bay after being viewed as a crucial part of the team's pass rush. He was traded to the Bears last October.

Adams is the second NFL player to die in the past month. Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chris Henry died on December 17 after falling out of a moving pickup truck.

In his three-year NFL career, Adams played in 47 games and recorded 13.5 sacks.

Air Force head coach Troy Calhoun is staying at the Academy and will not be Tennessee's next head coach, according to a release from the Air Force Academy.

He released the following statement:

"We are more than grateful and proud to be closely involved with the character building of our cadets and the mission of the United States Air Force Academy. We are diligently recruiting and working with our team to prepare for the upcoming season. We look forward to coaching and being a part of the Air Force Academy team both on and off the field in 2010."

The whole domino reaction started after Pete Carroll decided to leave USC, causing Kiffin to move to the Trojans. But the domino stopped right there, says Troy, cofnirming he is not leaving Air Force:

On the Christian Broadcasting Network’s “700 Club” today, after a lengthy interview with a missionary who talked about helping the victims earthquake in Haiti, Rev. Pat Robertson had some interesting thoughts as to why the earthquake struck the impoverished nation.

"Something happened a long time ago in Haiti, and people might not want to talk about it," Robertson said on his Christian Broadcasting Network show. "They were under the heel of the French ... and they got together and swore a pact to the devil. They said, 'We will serve you if you'll get us free from the French.'

"True story. And the devil said, 'OK, it's a deal,' " Robertson said. "Ever since, they have been cursed by one thing after another."

Robertson's comments were based "on the widely-discussed 1791 slave rebellion …where the slaves allegedly made a famous pact with the devil in exchange for victory over the French.

Robertson, the founder of the Christian Coalition and a 1988 Republican presidential candidate, has a history of making provocative comments, often in the wake of calamity.

Sarah Palin has big plans to take on America in 2010 — the first step being a regular contributor to the Fox News Channel.

Sarah Palin, former Alaska governor and one-time GOP Vice-Presidential candidate, has signed on to be a regular contributor for the conservative FOX News Network, The New York Times said on Monday.

“Governor Palin has captivated everyone on both sides of the political spectrum, and we are excited to add her dynamic voice to the Fox News lineup,” said Senior VP of Programming Bill Shine.

The mother of five will not have her own show, but will host a series which is reportedly slated to occasionally air on the news network — similar to what commentator Oliver North already does at FOX.

Randy Johnson retires

Randy Johnson announced his retirement from baseball after 22 seasons in the major leagues Tuesday evening.

Johnson said he took his time this winter, waiting to make his decision until he could do so "wholeheartedly, and stick to it." He put the chance of him staying retired at 100%."There's not a 99.9% chance," he said.

For now, he said he would enjoy a summer with his family and perhaps partake in some activities generally forbidden under the standard player contract.

The towering, fearsome left-hander won five Cy Young Awards, including four straight from 1999-2002, and will finish his career with 303 wins. He is second on the all-time strikeout list with 4,875 and his strikeouts per nine innings pitched rate of 10.6 is the best ever.

In his one World Series appearance versus the Yankees, Johnson went 3-0, threw 17.1 innings, 2 complete games and a shut out.

He also won a World Series MVP with the Diamondbacks in 2001.

Tyler Thigpen wasn't expecting to play today.  He's the Miami Dolphin's third string QB and only recently joined the Miami squad this past Fall.  Tyler was probably just as surprised as other Dolphins fans when he was called on to finish today's game against Pittsburgh.  And he was almost a hero.

It happened when White tried to convert a third-and-8 but fell just short on his 7-yard run. White, a 6-foot-0, 190-pound rookie from West Virginia, was forced out of bounds by Ike Taylor’s physical hit.

When White laid motionless, it prompts Thigpen to play as his replacement. He was acquired by the team at around late September to address Chad Pennington’s injury.

Tyler Thigpen led the Dolphins in several impressive plays.  He was successful with a 61-yard touchdown drive on his first possession.  He later threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to Davone Bess.  However, in the end, he gave up a very costly interception and couldn't finish the bid for a win.  Still, Thigpan proved himself a promising addition to the Miami team.
